PSA slab dimensions, and every other slab, in mm and inches

Most graders don’t publish the outside size of their holders, and the ones that do round it off. These are caliper measurements, side by side, with what each millimetre means when something has to fit around your slab.

By the PimpMySlab studio ·

Short answer

A standard PSA slab measures 135.75 mm tall, 80.25 mm wide and 6.25 mm thick (5.34 × 3.16 × 0.25 in). PSA’s thick-card holder has the same face but is 10.25 mm deep. BGS slabs are shorter and wider (130.75 × 83 mm), SGC slabs are the largest (138.5 × 86.25 mm), and CGC and TAG sit within a millimetre of PSA’s face.

Why the grading companies don’t tell you

PSA, Beckett and SGC don’t publish the outside size of their standard holders. CGC lists its holder at approximately 3.15 × 5.30 in and TAG at 5.25 × 3.125 in: rounded figures that differ from measured samples by up to about 1.5 mm. What graders do publish is the card thickness each holder accepts, in points (thousandths of an inch). That tells you what fits inside the holder, not how big the holder is.

The one official exception is PSA’s thinner holder for 25 to 40 pt cards, announced in May 2023: 5.32 × 3.16 × 0.27 in, or about 135.1 × 80.3 × 6.9 mm. PSA chooses the holder for each card; you can’t request one.

PSA slab size in detail

At 6.25 mm, PSA’s standard holder is the slimmest of the big graders. The 2024 redesign changed the plastic (20% heavier, more resistant to UV and scratches, no inner sleeve), but PSA states that the exterior dimensions are identical, so cases and frames made for older PSA slabs still fit the new ones.

  • Standard holder: 135.75 × 80.25 × 6.25 mm. Most graded Pokémon, Magic, One Piece and Lorcana cards end up here.
  • 25 to 40 pt holder: 5.32 × 3.16 × 0.27 in by PSA’s own figures, for thicker inserts and variants.
  • Thick-card holder: the same 135.75 × 80.25 mm face, 10.25 mm deep, for cards over 40 pt.
  • Tallboy: 183.75 × 107.5 × 7.35 mm, for oversized cards.

BGS, CGC, SGC and TAG compared with PSA

  • BGS (Beckett) is 5 mm shorter and 2.75 mm wider than PSA, and 8.5 mm thick. Beckett’s thick holder measures exactly the same as its standard one on the outside.
  • CGC shares PSA’s 80.25 mm width and is 0.75 mm shorter, but 1.25 mm thicker at 7.5 mm. Its thick holder is 12.5 mm deep.
  • SGC is the biggest standard slab: 2.75 mm taller and 6 mm wider than PSA.
  • TAG sits within about a millimetre of PSA’s face, at 134.75 × 80 mm and 7.25 mm thick.

What the numbers mean for cases and frames

A millimetre sounds like nothing until something has to fit around a slab. A case cut for PSA will rattle around an SGC slab and won’t take a BGS slab at all, because BGS is 2.75 mm wider. Depth matters just as much: a snug bumper case made for a 6.25 mm PSA slab won’t close around a 7.5 mm CGC holder.

How our art panels use these measurements

Every extended art slab insert we make is built around the PSA standard face: the panel covers the front of the slab, with one window cut for the label and one for the card. That’s why our cases are fitted for PSA standard slabs today, while CGC and BGS fits are still in testing. Prefer to print it yourself? The print file has the same geometry and cut lines.

Questions

How big is a PSA slab in inches?

About 5.34 × 3.16 inches, and 0.25 inches thick for the standard holder. PSA’s thick-card holder has the same face and is about 0.40 inches deep.

Are new PSA slabs the same size as old ones?

Yes. PSA’s 2024 holder changed the plastic, not the size: PSA states the exterior dimensions are identical, so accessories made for earlier holders still fit.

Which graded slab is the biggest?

SGC, at 138.5 × 86.25 mm. BGS is the shortest at 130.75 mm, and PSA is the thinnest at 6.25 mm.

Will a PSA case fit a CGC slab?

Usually not well. The faces are within a millimetre of each other, but a CGC slab is 1.25 mm thicker, so a snug PSA case may not close around it. Check the fit the case maker states.

Do you make cases for CGC and BGS slabs?

Not yet. Our cases are fitted for PSA standard slabs, and CGC and BGS fits are in testing. Leave your email in the studio and we’ll tell you when they pass.

The term started as a Magic: The Gathering frame and now covers anything that lets a card’s illustration keep going. Here is what it means on cards, how it differs from full art and alt art, and what it looks like on a graded slab.
